In the field of angiology; lasers can be used by applying the optical fiber in direct contact with the skin; this is called exovascular laser. It is also possible to use laser procedures internally by catheterizing the optical fiber within the vein to be treated. This is called an endovascular laser. Both techniques allow treatment of varicose veins by laser treatement. Their use depends on the situation of each patient.
Laser exovasculaire
The vascular laser is mainly used in the Angiology isآ Nd:YAG laser.
This light emitting device is applied to the skin, facing the treating telangiectasia. The laser beam will cause coagulation of the blood vessel that will eventually disappear within days or weeks.
The Nd: YAG laser is the laser of choice for the treatment of unsightly spider veins of the thighs and legs.
A vascular Doppler assessment is required prior to this treatment. If venous insufficiency is found, initial treatment with sclerotherapy is performed. Depending on the size of the veins to be treated, it is possible to couple during a same session, sclerotherapy and laser treatements.
Laser endovascular
When the laser is used directly within the varicose vein, it is called endovascular laser. This technique requires catheterization of the vein to be treated after local anesthesia.
This is an alternative to conventional surgical treatment of saphenous varicose veins.
