Angiology and Phlebology

Angiology also known as Vascular Medicine is a medical specialty that deals with blood vessels and blood circulation disorders.

An Angiologist is a medical specialist who treats diseases of the veins, arteries, capillaries and lymphatic vessels. His or her mission is to establish a diagnosis to then suggest the corresponding treatment.

A Phlebologist is a specialist of the venous system. He or she determines and treats chronic venous insufficiency through appropriate techniques: using echo-sclerosis or endovenous laser treatment for the largest varicose veins, sclerotherapy treatment for telangiectasis, and vascular laser treatment for spider veins.

What is the role of the angiologist/phlebologist

Medicine will never stop to amaze us. A specialist in blood vessels?
Well,there better be... with the number of people who constantly complain about there legs feeling heavy, sensations of tingling, or even swelling feet. What exactly is the role of angiologist/phlebologist?
He is the medical specialist who takes care of all diseases affecting the arteries, veins and lymphatics.
Thus an angiologist is involved in the medical care service for:
venous insufficiency, varicose veins phlebitis, arteritis, of lymphoid, vascular malformations, arterial problems in diabetic carotid disease (neck vessels, dizziness, hemiplegia ...) and vascular aneurysm. You should seek a phlebologist angiologist at the onset any symptoms mentioned above.

When to seek an angiologist

An angiologist is consulted to:

  • Perform an assessment of the blood circulation: circulation disorders in the brain, arms, legs, internal organs (stomach, kidney and testes), in case of illness or disease which obstructs or dilates the arteries.
  • Perform an assessment of vascular problems such as thrombosis, phlebitis, pulmonary embolism,
  • Conduct an angeological examinition in case of cold limbs, aching limbs and in the presence of non-healing wounds (leg ulcers).

  • Perform medical examinition of dialysis vascular access
  • Perform medical examinations of microcirculation disorders including Raynaud's phenomenon (whitening fingers, ulcerations of the extremities).
